Chapter Five

After taking some time to recover, Eloise and Gabe straightened their clothing and tidied each other up as best they could in a room with neither mirror nor refreshment.

"You have not answered my question, Eloise?"

The steely tone brought Eloise out of her muddled thoughts of what gown she would wear on her wedding day. Where they would live and venture on their honeymoon. She arched a brow at his vacant look. "Really? Oh, I thought I had." She walked toward the door and tried to keep the smile from her lips.

A hand clasped about her arm and pulled her around. "No, you did not. And I require one before we leave this room."

"Well, even though you lied to me about who you were, left me to sail from Africa to England all alone, and did not have the decency to call on me when you did return to London, I suppose I will."

Gabe kissed her and pulled her into his embrace, his whispered words against her neck sending shivers of delight down her spine. My, she was a wanton. Not five minutes ago, they had made love, frantic, and with more passion than she had thought possible, and here she was once more, thinking of him naked, erect and loving her with his body. "I would wish we visit Africa at least once a year. Given time, I know you'll love where I made my home, and our children will love the golden sandy beaches that run for miles."

She had loved Australia, and wasn't Africa similar in some ways to the country she had visited? Not to mention what Gabe was asking was not at all a great deal of trouble. In fact, yearly holidays sounded perfect. "Perhaps through the English winter months."

He smiled and hugged her to him. "Sounds perfect," he said and kissed her, sealing the bargain on their future.

"We had better return; the midnight unveiling is about to happen." Gabe straightened her mask and opened the door.

"Your Grace."

Gabe looked at the man who stood at the door, and a shiver of unease prickled his skin from the cold, calculating tone.

"Lord Fenshaw, to what do I owe the pleasure?" he asked and walked into the corridor, pulling Eloise along and not allowing her the opportunity to speak or curtsy.

"No pleasure, sir, for I believe you have already had more than enough pleasure for one night." Fenshaw turned toward Eloise and bowed. "Lady Eloise."

Gabe beat back the urge to box the imprudent baron behind the ears. A bright flush swamped Eloise's neck, and Gabe squeezed her hand in unvoiced support.

"Was there something you wished to
