In one hand, he held a riot of passionate colour: glowing pink and flaming crimson, carmine and darkest purple. And in the other, in complete contrast, shades of the most exquisite feminine delicacy: pale lilac, the faintest rose, pure white. On each stalk there were four blooms, some of them more than two inches across. The stalks themselves, ribbed and fluted and curved, were nearly eighteen inches long.

And Mrs Fraser said, ‘Oh, no, Denholm. You must choose. After all, they’re your sweet peas. You must decide which you think the best.’

She remembered afterwards how he hesitated, glancing from one hand to the other. And then, indicating the delicate bunch, with its calm serene colouring, he said, ‘I choose these.’

‘All right,’ said Mrs Fraser. ‘Then I’ll send in the others.’
