Chapter 8

Bucky didnt sleep well Monday night because of his bruises and aches. Steve sang to him but it didn't help.

Steve finally raised the bed till he was mostly sitting up. "Just can't fall asleep?" He asked gently.

Bucky shook his head. "I faww."

"I know. It was pretty scary," Steve agreed.

Bucky was scared. That's why he couldn't settle down for bed. "No Doe. I faww."

Steve gently rubbed his hand. "Joe won't be back for awhile. Cora is going to come."

Bucky shook his head. "No Cowa."

Steve sighed softly. "Don't worry about it right now, love."

Bucky's lip trembled. "Teeb wif me?" He awkwardly patted the space beside him.

Steve smiled and lay down beside him. "Alright. Let's snuggle." Bucky had come one step closer to saying his name. His speech was improving a lot!

He put the bed down again and got comfortable.

Bucky relaxed in Steve's arms, sucking his thumb hard.

With Steve here he was safe.

Steve didn't want to leave Bucky tonight so he got comfy and dozed off.

It was Thursday before Bucky would sit in his wheelchair without Steve holding him. He flipped out if Steve took off the shoulder straps or his tray. He sucked his thumb a lot more now too.

Steve didn't tell him not to. They would deal with it once his anxiety eased. He figured that's what it stemmed from.

Mandy showed up at ten thirty Friday morning as usual and set two big bags down on the floor.

Bucky pointed. "Dat?"

"Joe told me what happened." She unrolled a large foam mat and put several things down. A small metal frame was attached to the middle of the mat that would be over top of Bucky. There were two straps attached to the frame.

"Steve is going to put you on the mat."

"No!" Bucky yelled.

Steve looked surprised. "He said no."

Mandy gave Steve a look. "I realize that but we have to nip this in the bud. Let's just do it. The longer we leave it the more anxious he will be."

Steve stroked Bucky's arm softly. "You'll be alright. Steve won't let you get hurt. I promise."

Bucky cried out when Steve opened his restraints. "No no no!!! I faww!!"

"I won't let you fall," Steve promised, lifting him up.

Bucky's fear turned into a temper tantrum.

Steve was glad he was strong. He got Bucky on his back on the mat, restraining him gently. "Calm down."

After some talking and calming him with a weighted blanket, Bucky stopped crying.

Mandy brought the metal bar over him and locked it into place. "Good job Bucky," she said softly. "You are doing really well."

Bucky was still under the blanket. It felt nice. "Teeb," he said. "Wata."

Steve grabbed the sippy cup of water and gave it to Bucky. He drank deeply and then gave the cup back to Steve. "Manny I faww."

Mandy nodded. "Falling is scary."

Bucky sighed. Yes it was.

She pushed the blanket down enough to give Bucky's arm freedom. She attached a small wheel with padded hand holds like a tiny bicycle. She strapped his hand to the "pedal" and helped him move his hand around.
