A Broken Man in Flower: versions of Yannis Ritsos by David Harsent

At the ceremony of the ploughing of the fields

the priest would stoop to trace a cut

left by the first ploughshare

at the foot of the Acropolis and chant:

‘Never refuse a stranger fire and water.

Never send a lost traveller the wrong way.

Never leave the dead unburied.

Never slaughter the bull that pulls the plough.’

Empty words, then as now.

Fire, yes, to burn your neighbour’s crop.

Water, yes, to flood his fields.

The bull is butchered and hangs in some thief ’s barn

the apotropaic red ribbon round its neck.
