Chapter Nine
McCainâs shirt, soaked with sweat and blood, clung to his chest. He groaned painfully and leaned heavily on her, giving her more of his weight. She wrapped her arm protectively around his waist. She reminded herself McCain was a strong man and that heâd be all right.
McCain glanced down at her. His eyes seemed to bore right into her as if reading her thoughts. The idea was unsettling. âYou look worried,â he said.
âIâm still mad enough to shoot you myself.â
He raised an eyebrow. âIâve a bloodthirsty wife.â
Jessicaâs tart reply died on her lips when a half-dozen men ran out of the saloon toward the schoolhouse. Each had his gun drawn.
Jed, with a six-shooter in one hand and a lantern in the other, led the pack. âWhat in tarnation happened?â he barked. âWe heard gunshots coming from the schoolhouse.â
Jessica and McCain stopped in the middle of the street as the men encircled them. âThere was trouble.â
Jedâs lantern cast a searing glow on McCainâs bloodstained shirt. âWhat the hell happened? Did the schoolteacher shoot you?â
âNo!â Jessica gasped, horrified.
McCain chuckled, then grabbed his side as if it hurt. âShe didnât shoot me. Zeke did. He came by the schoolhouse looking for a fight.â
âWhereâs he now?â Jed asked.
âBack at the schoolhouse.â
âHe dead?â
âNope, but heâs got a bullet in him,â McCain said. âSend for the sheriff. I want him locked up.â
âWeâll take care of it,â Jed said. âLet me get the boys to help you home.â
McCain shook his head. âMy wife has everything under control.â
Jed walked up to McCain, his lantern held high, and inspected his wound. âA lot of blood. But it looks like a flesh wound. Iâd say youâll be fit as aââ
McCain groaned, drowning out Jedâs voice, and leaned more heavily on Jessica. She staggered under the extra weight and prayed she could get him back to the house. He tightened his hold around her waist. For an injured man, he was surprisingly strong.
âBelieve me, Jed,â McCain said, âitâs worse than it looks.â
Larry grinned. âGetting shot on your honeymoon ainât the best of timing.â
Heat rose in Jessicaâs cheeks.
âYou underestimate me, Larry,â McCain said. âNow, if youâll excuse me, my shoulder is on fire, and Iâve a taste for some strong whiskey.â
The menâs laughter rekindled Jessicaâs anger. âGentlemen, if youâll pardon us.â
Jed nodded and put away his gun. âMake sure Peg does the doctoring. I donât know if Iâd let your wife get too close to you with a knife, McCain. Sheâs got fire in her eyes.â
McCain shrugged. âSheâs already threatened to shoot me.â
âBut Zeke beat me to it,â Jessica said flippantly. Hoots of laughter followed as she led McCain home.
Peg stood on the front porch of McCainâs house, a shotgun in one hand and a box of shells in the other. She wore rag curlers, and black boots peeked out from beneath her thick blue robe. âWhat in the hell is going on? I heard gunshots.â
âMr. McCain has been shot,â Jessica said.
Peg frowned. âYou shoot him?â
âWhy does everyone think I shot him?â Jessica guided McCain up the stairs.
