CHAPTER EIGHT

“ALL I need is six more months,” Grant said, although he didn’t sound convincing about it. The truth was, there was no place for him to get the money to buy the clinic, and without the money he was going to lose it. No loans, no grants, no nothing. It was as inevitable as it was official. He was out of luck and out of time.

“Then what?” Mrs Kahawaii asked. “Can you guarantee me you’ll have the full amount? Or even a fair percentage of the price?” She wrung her hands nervously, glancing down at the floor. Leila Kahawaii wasn’t a woman who wanted to make this decision as much as she was one who had to. Grant understood that, and sympathized with her. She was a sweet lady who didn’t have many choices.

“No guarantee,” he said honestly. “We don’t make a profit—in fact, we barely scrape by—so nobody wants to fund a proposition like that, even though everyone I’ve approached sympathizes with us. I’ve tried every source I can think of, and have been turned down by all of them. But for the sake of the clinic I have to ask for an extension.” And for the sake of her husband’s memory, but he wouldn’t add that weight to her already heavy burden. That would be intentionally cruel, and he wouldn’t do that to her.

“You do know that if I thought you’d be able to honor the agreement I’d prefer selling the clinic to you, Etana. It was my husband’s wish, as you know. But I’ve spent a lifetime sacrificing, and never regretting it, so my husband could have everything he needed for his clinic, and now that he’s gone I want to make some changes in my life. He left me with very little except the clinic, and I can’t make those changes without selling it.” She sighed sadly. “I know you have the vision for what he wanted, and you’ve stayed true to that, but I don’t know what else to do. You can buy Kahawaii now, or I’ll be forced to sell it to someone else. And, as you know, I do have a good offer.”

Yes, he knew. And, no, he didn’t blame her for what she was about to do. She’d been very patient these past six months, waiting for him to put some kind of a deal together. Unfortunately, there weren’t many deals to be had for a clinic that operated a quarter of a century behind the times and owned very few assets other than its outdated medical equipment and a nice piece of land.

“Things are going to change,” he said, trying not to sound too sad or angry, as he didn’t want to make Mrs Kahawaii feel any worse than she already did about this deal. “It’s inevitable.” Her husband’s dream, which had become his dream, was about to disappear, and there wasn’t a damned thing he could do about it, thanks to Alana. That’s where all his anger was directed…at Alana.
