Chapter Twelve

Faye Delaney had been together with Norman long enough to know when something was wrong. And it wasn’t just that he came in through their front door, threw his car keys down, marched straight up to her and asked for a hug. This was serious.

He held her tight and buried his face in her hair, inhaling her delicate scent.

‘Bad day, huh?’ she asked him softly. ‘Want to tell me about it?’

With his arms still around her, he leaned back and looked into her face.

‘You know how they say all good things have to come to an end?’

Instantly, her smile was replaced by a frown of concern.

‘What are you saying?’ she asked, alarmed. ‘Are you telling me we’re finished?’

‘What? Are you crazy?’ he said. ‘You’re the best thing that ever happened to me. Why would I ever want us to end?’

‘But you just said—’

He kissed her lips and hugged her tight again.

‘Oh, Faye. Of course that’s not what I meant. It’s work, not you. Jeez, I don’t ever want to lose you.’

‘Well, I should hope not.’ She giggled. ‘I’d hate to think I’ve cooked dinner for nothing.’

She finally escaped Norman’s hug. ‘Now then, what’s the matter at work?’

‘They’re going to close Llangwelli station.’

‘Oh no,’ she said. ‘What’s going to happen to everyone?’

‘They’re going to transfer us all to Region and create a new murder squad.’

‘Well, that’s exciting. Er . . . isn’t it?’

‘That rather depends on who you are and what you want,’ said Norman. ‘I mean, it’s great for ambitious people like Sarah, and for the youngsters.’

‘And what about you?’ asked Faye.

‘When Nathan first approached me about this job, I was a bit of a lost soul, stuck in the most enormous rut and going absolutely nowhere. So the idea of making a new start, in a new town, training young detectives, sounded perfect. And, from the minute I started I have loved just about every single minute of it — my job, the people I work with, the area, the slower pace of life . . . Jeez, I even bought a house I like it here so much! And then, to add the icing to my particular cake, I met the most wonderful woman.’

Faye smiled and took his hand.

‘Do I know her?’ she asked.

Norman grinned. ‘You might have come across her. She shares my bed most nights.’

‘Oh, her,’ said Faye, squeezing his hand. ‘Yes, I know who you mean. I’ve heard she’s thinking about sharing it again tonight.’

‘I do hope so,’ said Norman, ‘because there’s nowhere else for her to sleep.’

‘Then I suppose she’ll just have to sleep with you then,’ said Faye saucily, and Norman had to struggle to clear his head of the thoughts her words had conjured up.

He cleared his throat. ‘Anyway, the only downside in my fabulous new life is occasionally having to deal with the backstabbing idiots at Region, and now it seems the chief constable wants to make it an everyday occurrence.’

‘But that sort of thing is water off a duck’s back to you, isn’t it?’ asked Faye.
