Chapter 18
Norman entered the Mercedesâs registration number into his computer. Immediately, a warning flashed up on the screen. Muttering to himself, he hurried across to Southallâs office. She seemed to have become less communicative as the day wore on but, as usual, her office door was open.
âHow does that work?â he asked.
Southall looked up from her desk. âHow does what work?â
âSomeone drove into the Rotherby estate in a black Merc. Five minutes later he came flying out like his arse was on fire. Then, when I run a vehicle check on it, I get an access denied warning.â
âWhat sort of access denied warning?â
âThe sort thatâs above my pay grade, yours too.â
âThatâs interesting.â
âI think weâre going to need Nathanâs help with this one.â
Superintendent Nathan Bain was their boss. Many years ago, he and Norman had worked at the Met. It was Bain who had persuaded Norman to become a police rejoiner.
Southall reached for her phone. âIâll speak to him now.â
A few minutes later, she was standing by Normanâs desk. âIt seems we are forbidden from intercepting the Mercedes or its driver, nor are we to make any enquiries about him or the car.â
âBut thatâs ridiculous! The guy is now connected to our murder inquiry. For all we know it could be him that killed Tilly Rotherby.â
âApparently, someone is coming to brief us about why this guy is so special.â
âCrap! I hate it when I hear someone tell me that,â said Norman. âIt means this guy is almost certainly a terrorist, a people trafficker or a drug dealer. I donât suppose Nathan knows which it is?â
âHe says he doesnât.â
Norman heaved a sigh. âI suppose it doesnât really make much difference. Whatever this guy is, a small team like us is always going to play second fiddle to that type of operation.â
âIt does make you wonder if there isnât a bit more to our murder than we first thought, though,â said Southall. âPerhaps this explains where Tilly was getting her money.â
âWell, maybe, but I canât see her as any sort of terrorist. And there was never any evidence to suggest she was involved in that people-trafficking operation we stumbled upon. So that just leaves drugs, but I canât see her as your typical drug dealer, can you?â
Before Southall could answer, Normanâs phone began to ring.
âHi, Judy, whatâs up? I hope this isnât another registration number, becauseââ
He listened for a moment.
âYouâve found what? Now, hang on a minute. Whatever has happened, it isnât your fault. We talked it through, remember. I said I was happy with your decision so if itâs anyoneâs fault itâs mine. Just take a deep breath and tell me what youâve found.â
He listened again.
âOkay,â he said. âYou know what to do, right? Frosty has already called them? Thatâs good. It sounds to me like you have it all under control. Weâre on our way.â He slammed the receiver down. âBollocks!â
âWhatâs the matter?â
âTheyâve just found David Griffiths. Heâs dead.â
âAre they sure?â
âOh, yeah, no doubt about it. It looks as if someone bashed his head in.
