It’s ironic, if you think about it, that in the space of just a couple of weeks, I’d gone from being a lowly customer service agent to executive secretary to CEO to being unemployed and living back home with my parents. In that time I’d moved from being single to dating the hottest guy I’d ever known to being single once again. I haven’t seen The Lion King since I was a kid, but isn’t there something in that movie about the cycle of life? Well, I’d certainly gone from the bottom to the top and back again in record time.

Still, I’d learned a lot in the process, and one of the most important lessons was that I shouldn’t take things for granted. For one thing, my friendship with Tamara had carried me through the roller coaster more or less unscathed, and now I was learning the benefits of taking things slow, living one day at a time, and cherishing the small stuff. Such as the absence of a pay check and my own place to call home. All right, scratch that last remark. I really don’t want to sound bitter because I’m not, really.

My dream has always been to be self-employed, but life kept interfering and I kept postponing. Now there was absolutely nothing standing between me and finally having a whack at the cupcake thing, so that’s what I did.

The only tools I had were my mother’s kitchen, my laptop, and the moral support of my family and Tamara, and I was off and running. Or rather, crashing and burning, for my attempt at setting up a website where people could buy the outcome of my baking frenzy ended in a total disaster. Good thing for me Tamara was now dating a brilliant web programmer. Alan took one long look at my rather childish sketches for what a cupcake website should look like, mumbled something about PHP and SQL strings and within a week my cupcake site was set up and ready to take orders. I still didn’t have any customers, but at least I had my virtual store in place.

Mom, who’s always been the real wonder in the kitchen, helped out with conjuring up an actual range of cupcakes in all possible sizes, shapes and flavors, and another week later, the first orders were rolling in and I was up and running. I wasn’t making any real money yet, but just to watch my first batches of muffins being shipped out was so exciting I could hardly sleep for days.

Of course, the thought of Remington gearing up for his wedding to Miss Botox had a lot to do with that. My pillow was still wet most nights, as I thought about what could have been. The fact that he didn’t call me or send me messages, like he had before, told me my decision had been the right one. He hadn’t been truthful with me, and if I’d have stayed with him, I was just setting myself up for delayed heartache anyway.
