DINNER

Rhett juggled the packages so he could free up a hand to ring the bell. He only had to wait a moment before he heard a buzzing sound that unlocked the metal gate, which led into a small courtyard. He’d memorized the address so he didn’t have to look to know it was apartment number five. Now, he just had to figure out where that was.

He looked around and saw a door that had the numbers two through five painted on it. After opening the door, he saw a narrow circular staircase, not unlike the one where he was staying. Looking up, he could see a door that had the number two on it.

“Oh hell, he’s on the top floor.”

He started climbing. The staircase became even more circular, almost making him dizzy as he trudged up the stairs. When he got to the last step, he paused, his breathing a bit labored. I’ve really got to find a gym.

Tucking the flowers under his arm, he knocked on the door. Not ten seconds later, Luc flung the door open.

“Bonsoir.” Luc was standing there in a pair of shorts and a white T-shirt, a huge smile on his face. “Welcome. Entrez.”

“These are for you,” Rhett said, holding out the large bouquet and the box of chocolates.

It was time for Luc to stand there, his mouth open and speechless.

“And I brought wine,” Rhett added, smiling. Ha, glad I could do it to him for a change.

“I… merci.” Luc finally took the flowers and candy from Rhett.

Rhett followed Luc inside, closing the door behind him. He hadn’t known what to expect, but he wasn’t expecting what he saw. It was one very large room; a good third of it taken up by a substantial kitchen.

“I will get a vase.” Luc opened a few cabinets before he found what he was looking for. “Ah, this will work.” He looked up at Rhett and smiled. “I never get flowers before.”

“It’s an American thing, maybe?” Rhett stood there and watched as Luc arranged the flowers. He could tell that Luc was not only surprised but pleased.

“Non, the French do it also… mostly women get flowers, I am thinking.” When he was done, he looked at the large box of chocolates, his eyebrows shooting up. “You got this from Monsieur Bellanger? The chocolatier shop across from mine?”

“Um… yeah. Is that a problem?”

Luc scowled at Rhett. “You spend too much money. He is… how do you say? Connard… asshole, but one of the best in the city.”

Rhett smiled. “Then I hope you enjoy them. Oh and here is the wine. I chilled two.”

Luc took the bag with the bottles of wine. He examined them closely and smiled. “You have very good taste.”

Rhett felt himself blush. “I had help. Actually, I’m no good with picking wines.”

“The person who helped you is… knowledgeable.” Luc put the two chilled bottles in the small wine cooler underneath the counter. “Come, sit down. I will have the entrée ready in a moment.”

Rhett stopped in his tracks when he saw the rather large coffee table set with candles, plates, and glasses.
