CHAPTER 30

Dirk

The flames were already curling around.

Down.

Blocking the smoky sky. Gusting everything with that brimstone stink. Enough to gag on the stink. Gag like being too close to a smoky bonfire. His dragon scale the only reason he wasn’t roasted to a crisp.

All their mouths … wide open.

Into darkness darker than any abyss.

Darker than any demon’s heart.

Hangry for some Dirk and Gorgee.

Their skeletal houses fueling their flamed existence … yet no toothy vertical mouth reached them.

No.

Those mouths ended well above the houses.

Gorgee, the Gorgeous Sky twin, clutched his arm so hard as he held her heavy self up, after catching her from behind …

But her peachy musk mixing with her outfit’s natural orchid smell, and thank the Heavenlies for his dragon scale, or else with her titan-sized strength … she was as bad as Sky when it came to not holding back.

Dirk aimed at the closest house. A skeletal house that seemed to grin blocky at him

Until he fired.

Sweeping the shot. Swinging it along quick and steady.

Aiming at all the houses in front of him.

Firing a spread of clear pink acid. An arc. Smelling strongly of sweet, creamy bubblegum berry. Just like Pearl smelled.

And all from his jinx slinger.

Pearl laughed. “One more! Behind you!”

Dirk swept around.

Fired another spread. Right at all the skeletal houses.

Just the flames were paces away.

Ready to swallow both Gorgee and Dirk.

When a shrill scream came from behind him.

Then in front of him.

The skeletal houses were hit.

All hit.

The flames began shrinking. Like a mimic did when it munched someone — but its mouths were wide open and flailing.

Shrinking back toward the skeletal house.

House shuttering in true agony.

Melting.

Crackling.

Shrinking with the flames.

When an inhumanly fiery and crackling voice rang out.

“Vengeance shall be ours!”

And all the mimics vanished into nothingness.
