On May 6, 1994, Jones’ lawyers filed suit in federal district court in Little Rock claiming, among other things, that Bill’s advances negligently and intentionally inflicted emotional distress and that he had defamed her. This got the Clintons’ attention. I didn’t hold out much hope for Jones. The Clintons were unfailingly unscrupulous. They owned countless talking heads whose coordinated attacks would resonate, and they had the most expensive lawyers on the planet. I believed Jones didn’t stand a chance.

By this time, I was on my way out the door at the White House. Within days, the West Wing would be off-limits for me. My testimony during various depositions had shown the Clintons that I was not a blind loyalist, that I was not willing to fall on my sword for them, and that I was not willing to lie and commit perjury for them, as so many others were. My days were numbered already, but I believe that with the filing of this lawsuit, my departure was swiftly accelerated. The last thing they wanted was for me to have another ringside seat to what they were going to do to Paula Jones. Since Bill Clinton had taken office, I had been sitting at ground zero during every single Hillary-created scandal. That was not going to be allowed this time.

I believed Paula Jones. Everything I knew to be true about President Clinton informed that belief. His inconceivable recklessness knew no bounds. His callous self-serving abuse of women as sexual objects was legendary. That which would be impossible to imagine with other people became easily believable when it came to Bill Clinton. He simply believed his entourage would provide cover for him.

I also knew what was coming. The champion of women, the “Every woman must be heard and believed” advocate for truth and justice for all women, Hillary Clinton, would mastermind the full attack targeting Paula Jones. As always, this talented maestro would orchestrate whatever she deemed necessary to ensure her and Bill’s political survival. It is what she did best, and let’s face it, she had decades of experience in this arena.

Predictably, the annihilation quickly took shape, and it was brutal. I am sure Jones never knew what hit her. It was a never-ending cacophony of verbal attacks. She was resoundingly ridiculed for everything from her looks to the way she dressed to her accent. You had James Carville bemoaning on national TV that this was what happened when you “dragged a hundred-dollar bill through a trailer park.” I personally found this to be priceless. James Carville, a man who looks like an escapee from an Area 51 display case, has no business criticizing anyone for their appearance or background.

The contrived character assassination that painted Jones not as a victim but as a gruesome villain, grew exponentially within hours. In one fell swoop and with the full power of the White House behind them, Bill and Hillary Clinton handily reduced her to nothing more than a money-grubbing loser—a woman who, if they were to be believed, was not all that far removed from serious promiscuity anyway.
