Chapter Ten

I sat on the back of a Ghost Tamers SUV while Steve worked a microphone wire under my shirt. TV wasn’t as glamorous as I’d thought. The battery pack was clipped to my jeans at the small of my back.

“Say something,” Steve said.

“My name is Deanna Oscar, and I feel stupid,” I said.

He chuckled. “Okay, now try a whisper.”

I sighed then whispered, “Why should we whisper? Will we scare the ghosts?”

He knelt down. “I know our team is a little...annoying. Trust me, I know.”

“Then, why do you work with them? A cameraman could get work at a news station or any number of places. Why this?”

“We’ve all had our experiences. Our reasons. I don’t have your gifts, but I can capture the truth.”

“All that techy stuff doesn’t do anything for me, but I understand the need for proof,” I replied.

I wanted to ask him about his experience, but I didn’t want to pry.

“You’ve got other talents. Not all of us do. I wish I could see what you see. The scariest part is not being able to see or hear whatever is there and doing this stuff. If it’s a ghost who’s mad or some sort of poltergeist, that helps people visualize.” Steve smiled.

“Okay, feels a bit silly to me. Does it matter what’s doing it? The idea is to get it to stop,” I said.

“That won’t all happen in one night, I’m guessing. You said there’s a lot here. We want you to walk through the place from ground floor to the top and then to the back storeroom. Tell us what you see and hear. You’ll be in there with me and one other tech guy holding some equipment. Just ignore him. I might ask you questions.”

“What about the rest of the team? Did I make such a bad impression?” I asked.

“No, but they wanted you to go in clean without a single bit of information. Obviously, it’s not perfect since you drove by, and Ivy showed you some of the case file. But, before you meet with the owners or anyone else, before we ask questions or do little interviews about the research and history, they want you to have a clean walkthrough. Get your psychic impressions. Don’t hold back. If you’re feeling sick or get touched, give us the details,” he encouraged.

“Maybe you’ll get really lucky, and I’ll be scratched or struck.” I rolled my eyes.

“It’s happened to plenty of us. I do want to capture the evidence,” he said honestly.

“It’s not a science,” I countered.

“No, but it’s real. Some people think it’s all fake. That’s what I hate.” He clenched his jaw.

“I know it’s all very real. Not to push, but feel free to vent,” I said.

He smiled. “Nothing to me. Not really. It’s a long story, and we need to get started. The team will be outside here in the vans, watching. They might feed you questions or suggestions through your earpiece, but don’t react. Ignore the comments, and make it look like they’re your own ideas.
