Ellie opened the chapel door and was greeted by a discordant cacophony from the band, who were playing an out-of-tune, out-of-time rendition of âTwinkle Twinkleâ. It was a genuinely unpleasant sound. The saxophones were honking, the trumpet squeaking. Skinsâs drums sounded as though they were being played by a particularly uncoordinated gibbon.
She hurried in, worried they might all have been drugged again, and wondering what on earth she might be able to do about it. As she skidded to a halt on the tiled floor, she saw at once the reason for the musical chaos â they were playing each otherâs instruments. Even Katy had joined in, on her sisterâs clarinet. The song ended to cheers and guffaws.
âWhat the heck . . . ?â she began, as the laughter died down.
âHello, love,â said Skins, taking a saxophone from his lips. âThey got bored of cards.â
âSo I see. But . . . I mean, did you even tell them about Hetty?â
âHe did, sweetie,â said Puddle from behind Skinsâs drum set. âBut thereâs nothing to be gained from us moping about, so we decided to lighten the mood. Can you play the flute?â
Ellie shook her head. âNot even a little bit.â
âPerfect. Grab mine and join us. Itâs the small case under Skinsâs chair.â
âI donât even know how to put it together.â
âEven better. Weâre trying âFrère Jacquesâ next.â
Elk waved Eustaceâs trumpet. âWhat key?â
âIf you can play it in any key Iâll give you a fiver,â said Dunn.
âIt comes in three pieces,â said Ellie.
Skins looked over. âWhat does?â
âThis flute. Look.â She held up the sections of the disassembled flute. âHow the heck . . . ?â
âTake the bit with the lump with the hole in it, and put it in the long bit . . . No, other end . . . Thatâs it. Now take the short bit with the keys on and put it in the other end of the long bit . . . No, other way round.â
âHow should it all line up?â
âDonât ask me â Iâm just the drummer. It probably doesnât matter. Can you get a note out of it?â
Ellie had seen flutes being played and knew it was something like blowing across the top of a bottle. She knew how to do that. She tried it. The instrument emitted a mournful hoot.
Puddle tapped the drumsticks together. âThatâs it,â she said, delightedly. âEverybody ready? After four. One, two, three, four.â
Once again, the tuneless din began. It had vaguely the rhythm of the familiar French nursery rhyme, but none of the assembled â otherwise highly skilled â musicians was able to get anywhere close to the tune. Ellie tapped at the fluteâs keys and managed to change the pitch of the hooting. She was beginning to imagine that she was approaching something vaguely like the melody, but hysterical giggling from the rest of the band brought it all to a premature end before she could claim fully to have mastered it.
Katy was smiling, but was less amused than the musicians. âCan we do something else now? Something Iâm good at.
