“Are you hungry?” Nidar asked as Leona gave up the stage to Eliana, the mistress of Magical Crafting.

“Hungry?”

“You do eat, don’t you? I found that listening to people drone on forever makes me incredibly hungry,” Nidar said.

“Yes, but only if you’ve got enough for my whole party?”

Nidar pulled a tray from his rift and held it out before me. It was covered with what looked like hors d’ouvres. I considered the bite-sized food, immediately doubting how anything that small could fill anyone. Nidar watched my expression and chuckled.

“Trust me, one or two of these will be more than enough to satisfy even the deepest hunger.”

Chloe leaned over me, sniffed the tray, then traced her lips with her tongue. She plucked a morsel off the tray that looked eerily similar to sushi, although it wasn’t wrapped in seaweed, but a red-speckled, black wrapper. Several different types were there—one that looked like a pig in a blanket, another that I could swear was a bacon-wrapped scallop. Sizzling cuts of meat, steaming as if they’d just come off a hot grill sat in the middle, while tarts, cupcakes, and small pies were closest to Chloe.

“So many options,” I said.

“I’ll take this,” Mabel said, scooping up one piece of sushi, two veggie bites, and the lava cake. I snapped my teeth at her playfully and growled back.

“I think those are most like your food on earth,” Mabel whispered, pointing at the sushi and pigs in a blanket.

Chloe and I both plucked bites off the sheet and tossed them into our mouths, chewing eagerly. Rich, well-layered flavors exploded in my mouth. But it was when I tried to swallow that I discovered the food was truly different. It wasn’t just brimming with nutrients and flavor, but also concentrated mana.

I coughed violently after finally managing to swallow the bite. Nidar chuckled and gently slapped my back, while Chloe grimaced and stuck out her tongue.

“That was…good, but why was it so hard to swallow?” she asked.

I cursed, pulled a bottle of water from my rift, then took a long pull.

“It is spirit food,” Mabel explained. “Only the most skilled chefs can craft it. Isn’t it wonderful? It helps with cultivation and works to stabilize absorbed mana already inside the body.”

“Very good, sister,” Nidar said, praising Mabel.

“Th—thanks. I have only ever eaten it a few times. My kind wasn’t allowed such luxuries save for a few rare occasions,” she whispered.

“That’s going to change now that my family has taken an interest in you and your party. We treat our allies like family. Not to change directions, but a little bird told me your party’s goal is to break through to the second realm before the beast wave reaches the city. Is that correct?”

“A little bird?” I asked, snorting quietly. “Where did you learn to say that? And honestly, I’m still trying to get used to you calling Mabel ‘sister’. It makes me feel like I’m interrupting family time.”

Nidar shrugged.

“A bird? Yes. It is a phrase we have picked up from your people here in the tower.
