Chapter Seven

Between Ava’s limp, the restaurant, the wedding planning, and the cold case, we hadn’t contributed to preparing for the Multicultural Celebration. My mom was manipulatively giving me a hard time about it as we spoke on the phone the next day.

“Yeah, I know you girls are super busy right now with everything. I don’t expect anything from you. I know grandma has asked why you and Ava haven’t been pitching in more, though.”

“Really?” I rolled my eyes. “I just saw her and Tom recently, and they didn’t seem concerned.” I was petting Sam Jr. with my feet propped up, trying to enjoy a few minutes of what had been a quiet time.

“Fernie, Wylie, and I have been doing a lot,” sighed my mother. “But that Lory has been pitching in for a community event for the first time ever … and also asking lots of weird questions. I never did like her. No wonder you and Lydia could never get along.”

“Yep, she’s something else,” I mumbled. Always with the drama—the women in my family. SO nosey, I thought to myself, then asked, “What was Lory asking about?”

DANG, IT! I hated it when I thought crap about my family then acted exactly like them!

“Lots of questions about 1997 this and 1997 that. Who was that gang of kids that got into all that trouble? Who was that ‘chick’ that got all the guys all worked up? She knows all the answers to those questions. I don’t know why she is pretending she doesn’t know.”

“Yeah, well, who was the gang of kids, and who was the chick?” I plopped Sam Jr. on the floor and jumped up, grabbing my laptop, opening up the I Spy Slides that Ava and I shared.

“There were some guys that supposedly lived in Tri-City who came here and rented some rooms in the B&B for about three months. A lot of small crimes started to happen in the town, and the villagers blamed them. The girl came with them—I met her and remember her well.”

“Why’s that?”

“She kept her head shaved and was annoying. There were two guys in the gang that she was always around that had gangster nicknames.”

“It wouldn’t be Guido and Liam, would it?”

“Now, how would you know that?”

“We ran into them in the park—sort of. It seemed like they were following Lydia and Monty,” I said, making some notes on the slides.

“Yeah, well, when they all came to town, Karl was quick to join up with them. I’m pretty sure that’s how he ended up in jail.”

I sat up upright. “What do you mean? Everyone is saying drugs.”

“You know, everyone said Karl went bad when that group came to town. I think it was a town gossip thing where people blamed drugs because no one knew what was really going on. I went to high school with Karl. I never knew him to be a drug user. He was into sports and a good kid. Now, when Lory came into the picture, he changed a little.
