The ideal diet for a diabetic dog will contain lots of so-called âcomplex carbohydratesâ such as starch, and also plenty of fiber, while having low levels of simple sugars. This reduces the peaks and troughs of sugar in the blood by releasing energy gradually through the day.
The best way of getting this kind of diet right is to feed a specially formulated commercial diet from your vet. But that doesnât mean you canât treat her to the occasional home-cooked meal. As long as you stick to recipes like this one, which are low in sugar and high in starch and fiber, you can definitely cook up something tasty once a week or so, just to add a little variety to her life.
This basic diabetes recipe provides approximately 50% complex carbohydrates, which is ideal:
âª750ml water
âª1 stock cube
âª450g lean beef, cubed
âª1 carrot, grated
âª1 stick of celery, finely chopped
âª100g broccoli, finely chopped
âª100g spinach
âª150g brown rice
Boil up the water and dissolve the stock cube in it. Then drop in the beef and simmer for about twenty minutes. Fish out the beef once cooked and set it aside in a large bowl with the grated and finely chopped veg. Put the rice into the boiling stock and cook for about 30 minutes until tender (less if you are using white rice).
Then drain any remaining water off the rice and pour the rice over the veg and meat, mixing well. The hot, moist rice will effectively steam the grated veggies, so they can be easily digested, but donât lose any nutrients.
Allow this mixture to cool and then feed. It can be frozen in single serving bags, so you can defrost one every week or so.
VENISON, RABBIT OR DUCK AND POTATO
â THE HYPOALLERGENIC DIET
Food intolerances and allergies are relatively common in dogs and can be serious problems. Intolerances are when the dog canât digest a certain food, such as milk, whereas allergies are more serious and involve nasty reactions to food, including itching skin and diarrhea.
If your dog has a food intolerance or allergy, your vet will probably recommend a suitable hypoallergenic diet, which is free of the particular foods your dog reacts to. Whilst it is ideal to stick to this food as much as you can, there is nothing wrong with cooking a tasty meal for your dog every now and then, as long as it is also free of whatever is causing your dogâs symptoms.
This recipe is designed to suit most intolerant or allergic dogs, but itâs important to check with your vet before using this, or any recipe, to make sure it wonât cause problems.
For enough for several meals (itâs easily freezable), you will need:
âª450g venison, rabbit or duck â minced*
âª450g potatoes
âª2 eggs
âª2 carrots
* Most dogs will be fine on venison, rabbit or duck, but obviously avoid any of these if your vet advises that your dog could be allergic or intolerant to them.
Dice the potatoes and carrots, boil them until tender and then drain and mash together. Meanwhile, hardboil the eggs and,
