Arteries

The strongest blood vessels are called arteries. Arteries

have thick, strong walls. They carry blood away from the

heart. Arteries carry blood to all parts of the body.

are made of strong muscle.

The biggest artery is called the aorta. An adult’s aorta

is almost as wide as a quarter. The aorta is connected

to the left ventricle. Smaller arteries branch off of the

aorta. As the blood travels farther and farther from the

heart, the arteries get smaller and smaller.
