Forgetting and amnesia

All of this brings us to the question of forgetting – both the ordinary forgetting we do every day and the forgetting that comes about because of a problem with brain activity, which is known as amnesia. Forgetting is necessary in order for us to live our lives. If we always remembered everything we knew, we’d be unable to function cognitively at all. There would just be too much information. If we are to make decisions, select what we pay attention to, or have conversations with other people, we need to be able to remember what is relevant in that context and forget the rest for the time being. So context – both social and physical – is vitally important in memory, and we’ve seen how the brain codes it as an essential part of memory processing. That’s why it is often helpful to recreate a context mentally when you are trying to remember something that won’t come immediately to mind.
