I stared at the photograph which lay face down inside the footstool.

Kit-Kat was going bonkers, so I lifted him out, plus the four croissants that Nanai had pretended to eat. Then I turned my attention to the photo, clicking on my ghostie so I could see it properly. It wasn’t in a frame, or an envelope (though Nanai might have thrown that away). It was small with some writing on the back, which, when I moved the ghostie closer, I could see was in Chinese. I had no idea what it meant of course so I turned the photo over, blinking at what I saw: Veronique. The photo was of her, holding a violin and smiling into the camera. I frowned. Was it just any old photo? No. Nanai had put it in her footstool with the croissants – where she obviously HID things. I’d never seen it before. Had Daisy’s dad brought it to her? But if so, why? And who gave it to him? Couldn’t they just have posted it? I had no way of knowing, so I turned the photo back over again so that I could see the writing, then I looked on Nanai’s side table, where her Sudoku book was lying with a pen, next to her lamp and the framed photos.

I’d just finished copying the writing down on my wrist when my whole body went rigid.

Nanai was stirring.

I stared at her, staying completely still as she mumbled to herself some words that I couldn’t understand. When she finally settled again, I let out a slow breath and turned to Kit-Kat, whose loud chomping was probably what had disturbed her. I took the croissants from him and shoved them back in the footstool. I put Kit-Kat back on my shoulder, peered out into the dark garden, and scampered back up to the house – quickly in case the fox was still there, only just managing to swerve round the hedgehog. Then I put the key back, shinned up the bannister (not easy) and slipped Kit-Kat back in his box.

Five minutes later I was asleep.

And it seemed like only five minutes after that that Veronique’s voice shook me awake.

‘Oh no!’ I heard her complain.

I pushed myself up on to an elbow and blinked away what little sleep I’d had. Veronique was on the other side of the room. She was kneeling by Kit-Kat’s box. I watched as she took him out.

‘What is it?’

‘He’s all floppy!’ Veronique lifted Kit-Kat up and inspected him. ‘And look!’

‘What?’

‘Croissant crumbs!’

‘Ah.’

‘Mum!’ Veronique exclaimed, before I could go on. ‘She knows Kit-Kat shouldn’t eat them but she can’t resist him, can she, you naughty little rat-rat? It’s his nose twitch, she falls for it every time. Well, that’ll teach you, won’t it?’

I climbed out of bed and went over as Veronique set Kit-Kat down in his straw, which he lay on looking green (if rats can look green). He looked as bad as I felt, actually, and I reached forward to scratch him underneath his chin.
