One week later

Leaning my hip against the counter, I watch as Kenzie moves toward me. I’m not going to lie to myself; I wasn’t happy she was at Keaton’s apartment when I got here. Surprisingly, she’s been nice, but I knew it couldn’t last. Archer had informed her I was in town, and she knew all about our history. Would she hate me because her husband had been more interested in me and never gave her a chance?

Her pink lips stretch wider the closer she comes. “I come in peace, I promise. I wanted to have a quick word with you while Keaton is out back with the kids.”

It kills a little piece of my heart every time I think about Keaton with kids. Even back in high school, I was planning on a life with him and thought one day we would adopt two kids. Over the past week, I listened to him talk about being a dad and show me adorable pictures of the two of them.

I’m unsure what’s going to happen between the two of us when I leave in a couple of days. Keaton’s entire life is here, and my job is in LA.

Kenzie peers out the window and smiles before she turns back to me. “In all the years I’ve known Keaton, I’ve never seen him happier, and that’s because of you.”

I couldn’t help the smile that spreads across my face. It had been the best week of my life. Florence had caught a flight home, and I’d checked out of my hotel room and had been staying in Keaton’s apartment. In his bed, where we acted like the teenage boys we were back when we hooked up before. Tonight, I’m finally going to take his ass after a week’s worth of prep.

“Where’d you go there?” She smiles at me knowingly.

Kenzie isn’t a bad person. The only resentment I feel toward her is from her taking Keaton away from me for ten years.

“It’s been the best week of my life here with K.” My shoulders slump. “I hate that I have to go back to work, but I can’t put it off any longer.”

“Yeah,” she says softly, placing her tiny hand on my arm. “That’s what I want to talk to you about. I thought I’d mention it to you first to see what you think.”

Could she be any vaguer?

“Sure. Hit me,” I cross my arms over my chest and watch as her eyes dilate at the way my muscles move. Dropping my arms, I wait. I don't need our situation to be any more strained.

“Like I said, you make Keaton happy, and I want him to stay that way. For too long, he’s been hiding who he is, and it isn’t fair to him. I know the only way for him to be happy is to be with you. I also know he doesn’t want to leave his kids or barely see them if he lives two hours away.”

I frown as my heart drops to my stomach.
