In their debilitated state, the X-Men became easy prey for Amphibius and Barbarus, who now emerged from their cover in the trees. But the X-Men weren't finished yet.
Nightcrawler, on his knees, tried to keep his head from spinning. It wasn't easy. He kept losing his balance. But he had learned to cope with that dizzy sensation in his youth, during his days with the circus, when he'd been trained on the trapeze and the high wire. He focused his concentration and finally mastered his senses.
Still, he knew he would not be able to holdout long against this force that was hammering at his consciousness. He had to act fast.
The vertigo effect was what Archangel had reported suffering from, during his first encounter with these evil mutants. It seems to be coming from that woman over there, he thought.
Nightcrawler couldn't reach her on foot — there was too much chance of being spotted — and he was too woozy to teleport. Instead, he sent a stone!
The projectile hit Vertigo smack in the temple. She fell to the ground in a heap, unconscious. Freed from her spell, the X-Men rose to their feet as the other evil mutants began to back away, fear chilling their bones at the loss of their comrade.
“We're obliged, elf,” Wolverine told Night-crawler.
Then he turned his attention to the cowering group of mutants. “I figure I speak for my buddies here. We don't like anyone messin' with our minds. An' we don't have words to tell you how we feel about what was done to this encampment and its people. So we intend to let our actions speak for us!”
The second round of the battle was as furious as the first. And the results were decisively in the X-Men's favor.
Watching the scene on a monitor from his laboratory in the citadel. Brainchild cried out, “My fellow mutants are being defeated!”
But a soothing voice from behind him said, “Be patient. Fear not. I will yet be triumphant.”
“As you say, Sauron,” Brainchild said with a little bow. “You are our master now.”
