This can be taken as a classic statement of the rationale of a People’s War, a war in which Third World people take responsibility for their own fate and fight to liberate themselves.

Bulosan modernizes this sort of revolutionary statement in two Whitmanesque poems about the Philippines, “Land of the Morning” and “Prologue.” The first of these is reminiscent of “If You Want to Know What We Are,” a poetic version of Bulosan’s Post essay on “Freedom from Want.”[10] It is, however, a very Filipinized version:

If you want to know what we are, look upon the land

Where the sun is always shining.
