I look up from my phone, and Alexandr is holding his phone in his hand, too, peering at me over the tall toolbox separating our sides of the garage. “Why is my girl telling me she looks like Kraken?” Kraken is his giant blue pet fish.

“I may have gone a little overboard,” I admit.

“Done!” Alain stands up from the side of my car and throws his hands up in victory.

“Yep, just putting the side panels back on now, then we’re done, too,” Alexandr’s lead mechanic replies.

Marsh, still grumbling this entire time, checks his watch and goes through the service checklist. I watch him make a full loop around my car, double-checking every task on the list. He inspects every single item, asks questions of the crew, then signs his name next to the mechanic who took ownership of each component and system. “Good work,” he finally tells them. “Thirty minutes early. Roll her up to parc ferme, assuming it passes his inspection.” He rolls his gray eyes and points at me.

“It does. Thank you, mates. Damn fine, job.”

Marsh does the same to Alexandr’s car, cross-checking everything. It gets the green light to move into the secured area of the track, where all the cars will sit locked up tight for the night waiting for the race start.

I stretch my greasy, dirty palm out to him. “Marsh?”

He squints his eyes at me, audibly huffs, but slaps his hand against mine nonetheless and shakes.

“We need to go,” Alexandr interrupts when he checks his watch.

The two of us make a mad dash to the team motorhome to get cleaned up and into our tuxedos. No lederhosen await tonight, and I can’t undo things that happened nearly a decade ago, but I can steer going forward. With my foot on the throttle.
