JASE GRABBED the first thing his hands fell on… the pair of jeans he’d thrown over the chair in his bedroom earlier and an old T-shirt. After cramming his feet into a pair of tennis shoes, he rushed out of his apartment, barely remembering to grab his truck keys and phone. Toshi had sounded… scared. Totally fucking scared, and that had damn near sent him into a panic.

He was known for his control and cool head… and his hands on the steering wheel were shaking. There were all sorts of emotions he wanted to stir up in Toshi, but hearing the fear in Toshi’s voice had gutted him. Jesus God, he’d never felt that before. As he pulled out of the apartment complex, he drove as quickly as he dared.

He made it to Toshi’s house under the promised fifteen minutes. He called Toshi and told him he was in the driveway and he was coming to the front door. He barely made it to the front porch before the door was thrown open and there stood Toshi in a pool of light.

“Aw man, Jase. I’m really sorry I woke you up—”

“Hush.” Jase eased Toshi back inside, closed the door, and pulled Toshi into his arms. “No more apologizing. I’m glad you called.” Dammit, he wanted to hit something… or better yet, someone. Toshi was still shaking.

“I am too.” Toshi rested his head against Jase’s shoulder. “I feel like an idiot, but yeah, I’m glad you’re here. Believe it or not, I can take care of myself.”

“I never said you couldn’t. But something like this can shake you up, so why deal alone if you don’t have to?” Jase hugged Toshi hard, then moved them toward the couch. “Sit down and tell me everything.”

Jase fought the urge to clench his fists as he listened to Toshi run through what happened. Someone had trashed his car, scattered garbage all over the yard, and from the sounds of it, had been spying on Toshi. That pissed him off, but the muddy boot print on the door really disturbed him. As much as Jase loved the privacy Toshi had out in the country, he now wished he wasn’t so isolated.

“Okay, it’s three in the morning. How about we try to get some sleep?” Jase saw the doubt on Toshi’s face. “Well, maybe not sleep but at least try to rest. Can you call in and take the day off tomorrow?”

“Yeah, sure. That shouldn’t be a problem. I’ll call right now and leave a message on the school’s answering machine. I can call the temp service we use and request a sub also.”

“Why don’t you do that now?” Jase waited until Toshi made the call before he spoke again. “All good?”

“Yes. I’ve done all I can about that. The receptionist will check the messages first thing when she gets in.”

“Good. In the morning, I’ll have a tow truck here and haul your car to my shop. I know the guy who owns the glass shop in town.
