There followed a confusing few minutes of questions and accusations as we waited for Edwin to return to the library and Aunt Adelaide ordered everyone to stay put in order to make sure nobody else was unaccounted for. Estelle waited for Edwin while Xavier and I kept a close eye on the restless guests.

“How long was she dead for?” I whispered to Xavier. Had she already been dead before Edwin had escorted Haylee and Betsy out of the library? I found myself wishing I’d checked on her earlier, but everyone had thought she was sleeping. Except, it seemed, for the killer.

“Only a few minutes,” said Xavier. “Do you think the poison was the same as the one used on the other victim?”

“If it was, the poison takes several hours to take effect,” I said. “According to my Aunt Adelaide, anyway. But it must have taken longer to affect Winona if she drank it last night.”

Did that mean it wasn’t the same poison? Even if it was, it took long enough to take effect that anyone might have given it to Tiffany, even someone from among the group of people Edwin had taken to the police station for further questioning. Which didn’t help us narrow down the list any further.

“Maybe the dose was higher with Tiffany, if she drank the whole bottle herself,” he commented. “That’s just guesswork, though. Who would have picked now to target her?”

“It’s got to be someone who was jealous of her win,” I said to him. “Why else would they target both her and Winona? That’s the only link between the two of them.”

But if Betsy and Haylee were in the clear, then we were back at square one again.

“I wouldn’t know,” said Xavier. “I wish the police had agreed to let everyone stay somewhere that wasn’t the library.”

“They took away the main suspects to stay in police custody, but I think they acted too late,” I said. “Did Tiffany say anything to you when you took her to the afterlife?”

“No,” he said. “She was surprised to be dead.”

I thought back to the confused hour after the book wraith’s escape. “Where’d her wine glass go? She was drinking from one earlier, and there might be traces of the poison left inside it. Nobody was paying any attention at the time.”

Which was no doubt what the killer had been counting on.

The library door opened, and Edwin walked in, accompanied by the same troll guards from earlier along with his wizard assistant. Aunt Adelaide beckoned Gregor through into the room where she’d taken the body, while Edwin and the trolls approached the guests in the Reading Corner.

“Who was the last person to speak to Tiffany Wren?” the elf policeman asked the gathering guests.

Nobody spoke for a long moment.

“I saw her working on her book,” Alana ventured. “Then I assumed she fell asleep.”

“I saw her at the buffet table,” someone else added. “Was that where she was poisoned?”

“Are we all going to die?” said Beverly tremulously.

Good question.

“No, of course not,” said Estelle, striding over.
