Chapter Twenty-Four
"It's obvious we're not at lunch," I said, thinking about the table that held Megan's sack lunch and my folders.
"That only matters if somebody knows where to look for us," she said, and she pulled me by my left arm.
"Are we done fighting?" I asked.
"For now," she said. "I need a lookout and you're going to have to do." I wanted to howl. Even with everybody knowing my secret, it seemed like nobody understood it.
"We already looked through the sheets," I said.
"Have you ever been to the computer lab?" she asked me.
"Like, six minutes ago."
"To work there," she said, accenting every word.
I shook my head. "Haven't needed to."
"When you get there, you have to sign in."
"On the sheet," I said.
"And on the computer. And I'm betting it keeps a log."
I rolled my eyes. "Is there a computer anywhere in the universe that doesn't have spyware on it?"
"Not spyware. I don't think it has any idea what we're doing when we're on it, or else these people playing games and placing bets would be getting caught all the time. I'm just wondering if it keeps track of the time that a person is logged in."
The school halls were deserted, as most of the kids were either in the cafeteria or their next class. "Wait here," Megan said, and she positioned me just outside the computer room door.
She first went to the desk and rifled through the sheets. "We already looked there," I whispered into the room. She found the location where the missing page should have been, and I could have sworn I heard a deep growl. "Well, I already said it wasn't there."
Megan walked to a computer by the door and jiggled the mouse. The screen flickered on. "Crap," she said.
"What's wrong?"
"If it does keep track of when we're on it, then it's going to make a log of the fact that I'm signing in right now."
"She won't know what you did," I said, watching her fingers hesitate over the keyboard.
From the hallway, I heard an upset female voice say, "What are you doing here?"
I winced at the sound and located its source. The woman's face was screwed up in anger, and my heart pounded in my chest. I said, "I'm not sure where, uh . . ."
The woman stepped past me and into the room, where Megan was pale and wide-eyed. Megan's face then changed. "What am I doing here?" Megan said. "What are you doing here?"
My mouth fell open. What was Megan thinking, talking to a teacher like that?
Megan looked past the woman and said to me, "It's only Ashley." Then she added, "You suck as a lookout."
"You're just now getting that?" I asked.
Megan turned on Ashley. "Coming to check up on us?"
"I realized we'd be able to get the other student's ID from the computer. When you weren't at the table, I figured you'd realized it, too."
"Then give me a second to look it up," Megan said.
"Don't put in your number!" Ashley said. "You need to log-in as a teacher if you want to view the computer's protected files.
