The next morning, he had a free hour after his first morning class. He walked over to the Security Department and asked for Philip Effling.

He was greeted by a dark-haired man with a bearing that spoke of military and law enforcement. “What can I do for you, Dr. Bristol?” He extended his hand. “You're the one who found the arm? Saw that woman swept away?”

Peter nodded and shook hands. “May we speak privately?”

“Of course. Come into my office and have a chair.” He closed the door behind his visitor and took a seat behind the modest desk. “What can I help you with?”

“I've heard some stories about events surrounding Dean Wasserman's death. I don't know if you're free to tell me anything, but I need to ask. Did a policeman come here without a warrant to search the Dean's office?”

Peter saw the man hesitate, wondered if he were deciding whether to be honest or politically correct.

“Officer Whitehorse had a warrant, but the university had the judge void it before he could complete his investigation.”

“Do you know what he was looking for?”

“I do not.”

“Given that aborted search, is it reasonable for me to assume that there are some questions about the Dean's death? Might it have had something to do with an unusual poison?”

He saw the man stiffen ever so slightly, then relax again.

“Please, Dr. Bristol. I can't engage in any speculation about Dean Wasserman's death. It was ruled to be natural causes—heart attack, aneurysm. The family had the body cremated without an autopsy.”

Peter decided to go for broke. “Is Professor Sterling Friese involved in this in any way?”

Effling stood up. “OK, I'm not sure where you're going with this, Dr. Bristol, but with all due respect, we have to wrap this up. I hope you can understand.”

“Of course, Mr. Effling. Thank you for your time.”
