Then, they were back at the river, at the spot they had met the day before, sitting on wide, flat stones near the water. The drive back from Skagway had been almost as silent as the one there, but a completely different kind of silence — one filled with hope and unspoken potential. And kissing. Every ten miles, they had pulled over to the side of the road to make out. After the fifth time, Olivia’s lips and face felt chapped, sore. She dipped her fingers into the cold water as she waited to recover. The river was speaking to her, dancing across the smooth stones and singing to her in its own mysterious language. Next to her, Russell sat still, staring out across the water. Olivia glanced at him and filled with warmth, certain she had done the right thing.

He must have felt her eyes on him. His fingers found hers and they wound together, the strong softness of his touch traveling through Olivia's palm to the rest of her body. Olivia didn't know what was going to happen next, but she was finally alright with admitting that and facing her future anyway. A future in Alaska, with Russell. She sighed happily and laid back on the rock, looking up at him.

Over Russell's shoulder, there was a bright flicker of light. Olivia held up her hand, squinting to catch sight of it again. Something shiny by the tree line reflected the sunlight back to her. “Hey…” she said.

“What is it?” Russell asked as Olivia stood and made her way over to the source of the light.

“Oh, wow. I can't believe it,” she exclaimed as she bent to brush the pine needles off of her cell phone. It was a bit scratched up, but less damaged than she would have expected.

“How did we miss it before?” Russell said. “Maybe it was covered by pine needles and then wind blew them off,” he guessed, then grinned. “Or maybe it was hiding for you until you had committed to staying here with me.”

Olivia laughed and hit the button to turn it on. It responded; the screen lit up, the background picture of her and Holly at the beach popping up.

“Looks like it still works,” she said. “Smile, Russell.” She opened up the camera app and took a quick picture of Russell before he even knew what she was doing.

“Hey, don’t be trying to steal my soul. I’m still using it,” he joked. “What's that about?”

Olivia held up a finger as she texted the slightly blurry photo to Holly. “I promised my best friend that I would send her pics of all the hot Alaskan men I make out with,” she said.

“Oh really?” He took a step towards her, his legs pressing against hers. His hands fell on Olivia's hips and the familiar burn returned, filling her whole body. “How many photos does she want?” he asked, his voice thick as syrup. Her phone dinged, missed call alerts and text messages filling the screen.
