“She’s vulnerable,” Church growled as she tore out of the damn parking area in Arran’s Jeep. “She’s too damn vulnerable.”

“I know.”

“We need to protect her.”

I turned to the Wolf and held his gaze. “I know.”

Vitold rubbed the stubble on his jaw, and even Arran curled his damn lip and bared his teeth. She wasn’t the only one exposed here…so were we. With the bond left unsealed, it felt a little too much like rejection.

“She’ll be back,” I urged. “Next time, she’ll stay.”

Hunt her, my beast commanded. Drag her back. Make her one of us.

I tried to shut out the urgency. Still, it tore through me like the call of the full moon. The beast snarled and bared his teeth. White fangs shimmered in the dark, the tips etched with her blood. I hadn’t meant to mark her…hadn’t meant to bond with her. Fuck. I hadn’t meant any of this.

But wasn’t fate a goddamn bitch.

A real goddamn bitch.

First, she was hunting the Vampires’ mate, then she was at the damn warehouse. The one place no mortal should’ve been—especially a mortal like her.

I tore my gaze away as Church strode toward the open back door and disappeared. Any other woman would be begging to stay…any other woman would pack her shit up in an instant and take over my damn life. But Carina Chase wasn’t just any other woman.

She was wild and untamed.

I wanted it to remain that way.

But the woman has a darkness about her. A shadow of terror that clung to her damn soul. I’d scented the taint the moment I laid eyes on her in that warehouse. She might be running from us…but she’d been running her entire life. Running from her purpose…and her damn life. I winced at the memory of the Fae marking. It might be dulled, but it wasn’t gone…not anywhere near it.

The darkness clinging to her soul and the Unseelie power would tear her apart. That was a given…the only way she could survive was—

I froze, and sucked in a deep breath.

“What is it?” Arran cocked his head.

White fangs shone from my Wolf, lips curled in a sneer and a smile. “You fucking knew, didn’t you?”

Arran stepped closer, silent now. Careful and watching as the pieces all slipped together inside my head. The beast knew. He’d scented it. “You scented a darkness in her. Some kind of curse when she was hit with the Unseelie power. You knew the only way she could survive was if she was part of the pack. We’d bear the brunt of that collision, wouldn’t we? If we were bonded.”

The beast just slunk backwards, teeth still shining with her blood as he slipped back into the darkness of my mind.

“He bonded her on purpose?” Arran murmured, brows furrowed, dark eyes shining with fear.

“Looks that way,” I forced through clenched teeth.

He turned his head and looked in the direction she’d sped away. “Fuck me. She has no idea what’s coming, does she?”

I didn’t have an answer. If she didn’t understand now…then she soon would.
