Chapter Six

For our own good

A growing body of evidence demonstrates that behavioral science insights — research findings from fields such as behavioral economics and psychology about how people make decisions and act on them — can be used to design government policies to better serve the American people. (Barrack Obama Executive Order, September 2015)

In 2018 Time Magazine ran a piece called The New Science of Happiness.97 The article is based on the new direction of psychology and the attempts to understand what it is that makes human beings happy. The field of positive psychology, like other behavioral sciences, is attempting to standardize, for a lack of a better word, what it means to live a satisfactory life. This is disturbing when you take into consideration the established approach that has already been set for studying such things by Skinner. This means that a study of happiness is being done from a secular, collective viewpoint that offers a one size fits all explanation.

The findings presented in Time Magazine’s article seem to reflect Skinner’s biases towards communal living and Utopianism. One of the first points they make represents the leftist, anti-capitalist view that the pursuit of wealth does not lead to a life of fulfillment and meaning. This is something we all understand. We do not need psychology to tell us money does not buy us joy. Their bigger point, when it comes to money, is that once an individual’s basic needs are met, the pursuit of additional wealth does nothing to raise our happiness levels.

Who determines what constitutes our basic needs? Who decides what is best for us? Another finding they mentioned is the relationship between religion and happiness. Belonging to a religious community seems to contribute to feelings of happiness and belonging, but they are unclear if this is related to God, of just being part of a larger group.

For a science of happiness to exist then, these issues must be uniform and applicable to all people, in all situations. To suggest a one size fits all approach to being happy denies man of his individualism and his liberty to pursue that which makes him happy as a unique member of society. To create a scientific definition of happiness is to impose tyranny for your own good.

A science of human happiness could be serving a greater purpose. It is no coincidence that they are deliberately attempting to draw correlations between wealth and being happy. As the year 2021 kicks off, we are hearing more and more about something called The Great Reset.98 This is being deemed as a start over of sorts, an opportunity created by the Covid-19 pandemic to reform global economics and the way human beings live their lives. For the real conspiracy theorists out there, the vision for the completion of this plan coincides with the established goals of the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda.99 Which by the way, is supposed to reach its desired end in the year 2030.
