Chapter Fifteen

Mira’s New Best Friend Confronts Her Ex-Best Friend

Going along with what LJ wanted to do became the theme for Mira’s day. Late in the afternoon, just after trick-or-treaters would start coming out, the two witches were walking aimlessly around town so LJ could have fun.

Mira wasn’t doing much magic, which LJ thought was a shame, but Mira didn’t care much. On the other hand, LJ was running around, doing random spells and having the time of her life. She changed some people’s Halloween decorations, brought a couple witch to “life,” went invisible and jumped out of bushes to scare people, and stole some candy from people’s porches when nobody was looking (usually by summoning the candy from the end of the driveway). Mira couldn’t help but smile as she thought about how much LJ was in her element.

Mira remained next to LJ for the most part, but as they turned onto the street behind Mira’s house, LJ ran ahead to do something. Mira wasn’t quite sure what that ‘something’ was, but depending on what it was, Mira thought it might be for the best that she remained oblivious so she could avoid being a witness to anything. LJ would need someone to bail her out of jail if something went wrong, of course.

The house near the top of the street had some interesting decorations out so Mira stopped to look at them for a minute. She wasn’t in a rush to get anywhere. She only got thirty seconds of peace, though, before somebody said her name.

Mira looked up, expecting to see LJ beckoning her over somewhere, but instead she saw Emma and a boy their age. The boy looked familiar but Mira couldn’t quite place him.

In a sickly sweet voice, Emma said, “Mira! It’s so good to see you.”

Mira cringed at the tone. That was how she spoke to people she hated.

Not even trying to sound nice, Mira responded, “You too.”

Emma grabbed the hand of the boy.

“Have you met my boyfriend, Justin?” She asked.

Mira looked him up and down. He looked uncomfortable standing there, and she wondered whether it was because of her or Emma. She wouldn’t be surprised if it was her; if Emma was dating him, he must have been a witch and he probably knew all about Mira and her past. Never mind what Emma must say about her.

“No, I don’t think I have,” Mira said. “It’s nice to meet you.”

In a quiet and deep voice, Justin responded, “You too.”

“What are you doing out here, Mira?” Emma asked.

“Just on a walk,” Mira shrugged. She wasn’t sure why she didn’t mention LJ was out with her; she just wanted to keep something to herself, something that Emma didn’t get to touch, even if it was such a small detail.

“Right, but why…” Emma gestured around. “Here?”

Mira frowned. “Well, mostly because I live here.”

Emma tilted her head. “Do you?”

“Emma, you know where I live,” Mira said flatly. “You used to come over everyday.”

“Oh, I wasn’t sure if you moved or something.
