I knew I had to play this situation very carefully. Someone had put these books here on purpose, they wanted to paint me as the person that had been stealing from the charity. Whether or not that someone wanted me to find the books just yet, I couldn’t say. I had a feeling this stuff wasn’t supposed to be found any time soon. In my head I saw this as a slight advantage, but not a very big one.

I pulled out my phone and called the only person I could trust. Fifteen minutes later Deacon met me on the boardwalk. “Hey,” he breathed. “I came as quickly as I could. Is everything all right? Did you get a lead with the Nash case?”

“No,” I said, “but I might have a lead in my Book Bin case. This is the boat Griselda left me.” I turned and thumbed at the eyesore.

“Yikes,” Deacon said. “Please don’t tell me you’re taking that thing out on the water. You’re putting your life in the hands of Davey Jones there.”

“I just came here to look at the boat. The thing is packed with books Deacon. All valuable books taken from Book Bin.”

“Someone is trying to set you up,” he said, putting it together instantly.

“What do I do?!” I said in despair.

Deacon crossed his arms and stroked his mustache and beard as he thought. It was quite a pleasant day on the island today and the sun was beaming down. He looked handsome in the light.

“Let’s lock the boat back up for now. Best we don’t touch anything. The station is stretched enough as it is keeping an eye on folk in the woods, but I can put an officer here for a few hours each evening and have them stake out the boat, maybe see who comes along?”

“So, you’re not arresting me?” I said with a sigh of relief.

Deacon laughed. “Would you really have called me if you thought I’d arrest you?”

“I guess not. Just, this doesn’t look good for me.”

“Chelsea, you know you didn’t take these books, and I know that too. Have you even been to the boat before this?”

“No.”

“So, there you have it. Nothing to worry about. There are cameras around here and they must keep a log of visitors. This won’t take long to figure out.”

“Okay,” I said. Deacon had actually made me feel a little better. He took me in his arms and hugged me. “You are helpful, thank you.”

“What, do you think I’m just going to leave my girlfriend stranded and in trouble?” He laughed and we walked back to the parking lot at the front of the harbor. I handed the keys back to the girl in the booth.

“Everything look good?” the girl asked me.

“Actually, it looks like someone might have tampered with the boat,” Deacon said to the girl. “Do you have surveillance footage I could look at?”

“Uh… yeah. We can dig that up. I’ll have to call my boss. Do you need it now?”

Deacon pulled out a business card and handed it to the girl.
