Chapter 23

Malik

It had been over thirty hours since I had last taken something akin to a nap. I had replaced my blood with magic, thanks to Matt’s plans, and it has kept me somewhat human…at least until I heard what Rosie did at Winterfell.

They thought they were slick and snuck in during the light hours of the morning, but I was already there, waiting for them. Not only was Claudine able to follow them and keep tabs on everything that they did…but she also had to report it back to Xena and Ezekiel.

Cue an angry phone call from Xena not moments after the tower fell.

Now I was here staring at the dirty, disheveled group of people that will single-handedly ruin everything that I have been working for the past few hundred years. If Ezekiel came snooping around it would severely delay our timeline and Marques didn’t have any more time to wait, especially with another hybrid in his clutches.

I eyed Rae as she stood straight next to Rosie. Her chin was high and her chest was puffed out like she wasn’t staring into the eyes of the one person that could end her right now. I knew what she was doing.

Hell, I helped Marques come up with it, I thought bitterly.

Well…I didn’t say the words directly but more mentioned that it would be safer if neither I nor Matt took her away from the group since I had long known that they began to suspect me. It was when the whipping started; they were known to only use pain on their captives and those who they found a threat…now look at me, look at my fucking face. The evidence of their trust had littered my body and every time Matt had to unlock my memories, I was set alight with a fresh dose of rage.

Rae would prove to be a problem if she continued to act like that. She had already been walking on thin ice and I would need to be careful in case she even got a whiff of what my role was.

I wanted to live, after all.

“What the hell were you thinking?” I growled towards Rosie. She looked like an utter mess standing in between Rae and Amr. Her hair was sticking out every which way, her sweatshirt had dust on it, and there was a hickey on her neck. I couldn’t tell if the hickey was fresh or not but paired with all of the mess of her clothing it didn’t matter, it still painted a horrible picture that would just end Xena.

Daxton was off towards the end of the group, next to Amr. He opened his mouth to speak.

“Silence,” I commanded. It almost hurt to use my power. I had used it far too much in the time that I had been awake and now I felt an ache spreading across my body.

Rosie frowned silently causing me to cock my brow at her. I expected her to fight, to yell, but she seemed oddly docile now.
