Fergus Fox lived with his mother and his sister, Twitch, at the bottom of the garden of an empty house at Number 33, Hope Road.

It was a brilliant place to live, and the only home that Fergus and Twitch had ever known. There were lots of trees with tunnels under their roots and thick hedges to crawl through. In the summer, the grass grew long because there was no one to cut it, and so it was full of nice things to eat like beetles and worms. But the best thing about Hope Road was the café on the corner. Fergus and Twitch thought it was their very own takeaway! While they waited in the den, Mrs Fox jumped over the hedge and looked through the bins. On a good night, she came home with leftover hamburgers, leftover fish and chips or leftover sausage rolls.

Fergus liked hamburgers and Twitch chose fish and chips. But they ate anything Mrs Fox brought them.

“A fox can’t be a fussy eater,” Mrs Fox always said.

The only times when there wasn’t much food to be found was when the rubbish men came and Mr Lard, who owned the café, cleaned out the dustbins with bleach. It left a horrible taste which none of the Fox family liked.

One morning in December, Fergus woke up early. The air was colder than he had ever known. He crept up to the entrance of the den. It was still dark, but there was a bright moon in the sky, and to Fergus’s amazement the ground was white as if it was covered in chicken feathers.

“Wake up, Mum!” he cried. “Look at the feathers! There must be hundreds of chickens in the garden.”

“Thousands,” said Twitch. Her black eyes glittered. “I can almost taste them.”

“Those aren’t feathers,” said Mrs Fox. “That’s snow!”
