Mara imagined her long flight, all the way back north to join the rest of the flock. The huge family of swans would have missed her. When she thought about her swan like that, going back where she belonged, Mara didn’t feel so sad any more. She’d never forget her, and the magic moment when she held a wild swan in her arms. But you can’t keep a wild swan, like you keep chickens or cats. Not for ever. Sometimes you have to let things go.

Mara climbed back into bed. Now it was beginning to get light, she could see the stocking on the end of her bed, stuffed with little parcels all wrapped up in blue paper with gold stars. Yes! It was Christmas Day at last!

Mara picked up the Christmas stocking, and ran down the landing to join her own family.
