Treatment Options for Bowel Dysfunction

Some men treated for prostate cancer complain of problems with their bowel function, which includes frequent stools, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and an inability to control bowel movements. These happen more often after radiation than surgery. Fortunately, the rates are dropping with greater use of the newer equipment. Often these symptoms are only temporary. Drugs and dietary changes can help reduce diarrhea. Avoiding fiber, spicy foods, raw fruits and vegetables, beans, whole grains, and caffeine also can help until the symptoms go away. Drinking fluids is important to avoid dehydration that occurs with chronic diarrhea. Eating smaller, more frequent meals can be helpful. In severe cases, instilling drugs into the rectum or cauterizing bleeding vessels may be needed.
