Mia

I hated Teo Venturi. I despised his brother and father too. But more so, I hated myself for not being stronger. I hated that I'd allowed Teo to hold me as I sobbed until all of my tears ran out. I hated that he had tricked me into believing that he was a nice, kind man when there was nothing nice about him.

I hated myself even more for still wanting to curl up in his arms and bury myself in his chest, the one place I'd always felt safe.

My mind raced with a flurry of thoughts as Teo drove us back to the compound. He hadn't spoken to me since he'd yelled and forced me to watch the horror unfold, except to tell me that it was time to go.

Never in my life, would I have suspected that Teo would have that amount of cruelty in him. I felt numb, leaning against the passenger door, staring mindlessly out the car window as trees and buildings zipped by.

I was beyond weary, my limbs heavy as if I'd just run for miles. I was grateful for the silence. I had no idea what to say to him.

We pulled up to the house and I couldn't get out of the car fast enough. I didn't even give Teo the chance to open my door, jumping out the moment we'd come to a stop.

Teo didn't say a word as I rounded the car and headed inside. Luci stopped me in the entryway.

"Ms. Mia, you're back." Luci sounded happily surprised until she saw my face. I couldn't imagine how horrible I must have looked but the concerned expression on her face told me enough. "What happened? What's wrong?"

"Nothing, Luci. I'm fine. I just want to go upstairs and hide in my room for the rest of the day.

Luci looked conflicted as though she was holding back information.

"What is it, Luci?"

"Mr. Venturi asked that I let you know that dinner will be in the dining room at eight-thirty sharp."

"Which Mr. Venturi? There are at least three just living in this house," I asked with some annoyance.

"Giovanni. He said that if you refused, to remind you of his generous gift this morning and that all he asks in return is the honor of your company."

I let out a sigh. So, this is how it's going to be? Anytime I resist, he will threaten me with that gun.

“Tell him I'll be there.” I checked the time on my cell. “I need a shower and a nap if I'm going to get through dinner tonight.”

“What about lunch? You need to eat.” Lucia sounded concerned.

“Alright. Would you mind bringing a little something to my room in about twenty minutes? I'll eat after my shower.”

“Of course, Ms. Mia. Is there anything, in particular, that sounds good?”

“Anything will be fine. Thank you, Luci.” I gave her a weak smile before heading up to my room.

A long hot shower, some food, and a nap barely seemed to bring me back to life. I felt defeated.
