The sun poured into my bedroom window at just after seven o’clock. My head throbbed and I could’ve sworn I still tasted whiskey on my lips when I eventually rolled out of bed. I rubbed the back of my head, my dark hair a mess of tight curls and some straight pieces after the way I slept last night. I headed into the bathroom, starting the shower, as the steam rose up into a small cloud.

I stood under the hot water, washing away the light scent of alcohol on my skin and the cigar smoke stench in my hair. I remembered a man standing behind me, completely lost in thought, puffing his cigar smoke right into the back of my head.

Cigar. Fuck. I’m supposed to meet with Mancini in an hour.

I brushed my teeth, found a quick change of clothes stuffed to the back of my closet and got dressed.

A few moments later I was barreling down the stairs with one boot on trying to get out the door.

“You’re in a hurry.”

I turned around to see Teresa sitting there on the porch, a cup of coffee in her hands.

“Off to meet someone who might know something about underground casino games around here. Saddle up. You’ll be back at the table in no time,” I said.

The place was always exactly as I’d remembered it, not a petal or a crystal bowl out of place.

Iso stood near the ornate staircase, his lips pressed together dismissively like he couldn’t care less that I’d just arrived. “Keys sent three of you to take care of business today? I was only alerted to Tank and Roller,” he said, tapping his little earpiece.

“Not here on official business, but I do need to talk to your boss.”

“I’m afraid Mr. Mancini’s too busy to chat right now, Wildcat. I suppose you’ll have to try him another time.”

“No can do, Iso. I need this. Besides, I disposed of your little mole problem just a few weeks ago…. something even you couldn’t pick up on. Now, be a nice guy and get me into that room,” I ordered, pointing to the double doors of Mancini’s office.

Iso let out an exasperated sigh before he ventured off to properly set our meeting.

Just a few minutes later, the door swung open and he was ushering me inside.

Mancini sat
