Chapter 7

“I never thought I’d say this, but I didn’t think hare would taste so good,” Teddy said. He licked the juices off his fingers and set his bone down. “Compliments to the chef.”

“Thank you,” Ryder said with a grin.

“You dick. I roasted the meat he’s eating,” Alec grumbled next to Ryder.

Over the course of the evening, Alec seemed to have thawed a little around him. Oh, Teddy doubted Alec trusted him fully yet, but at the very least, he seemed to tolerate Teddy’s presence. The same went for the others. He’d been here less than a day, only for a few hours after all. To them, Teddy was still an outsider, but he’d show them he fit in here, that he wasn’t a liability as Alec called him.

“We should head to town for a drink after this. I could use a beer,” he said.

The men traded looks he didn’t understand. Even Dom looked thoughtful.

Ryder grabbed a beer can from the cooler next to him and offered him one. “This should do.”

“No. Let’s all go to a bar. You guys are so tense. It won’t hurt to unwind, maybe play some darts or billiards?” he suggested.

Again, they looked blankly at him, then each other.

“Teddy,” Dom said softly. “We aren’t exactly welcomed in town.”

Teddy felt foolish. He remembered how the locals had reacted when he asked about Talon and Dom’s pack. They were clearly terrified of the Wild Manes, considered them a threat.

“But you go down the mountain for supplies, right?” he asked.

“The stores tolerate us,” Alec said with a shrug. “Because we’re customers. It’s Ryder’s fault some of the bars in town don’t allow us in anymore.”

“You were the one who threw the first punch,” Kris told his brother with a growl.

Alec glared at Kris. Teddy wondered what was up between those two. If they hated each other’s guts so much, then why were they in the same pack? Questions for another day. He didn’t think Talon or Max would show, and he’d been so anxious all night. He suggested going out drinking because he wanted to relax with everyone else.

“You know what? Screw the entire town. Let’s head to a bar where they haven’t banned you guys yet,” he said.

“Huh.” Ryder scratched his beard and took off his hat to smooth his hair over. “I like that plan.”

“You’ll end up punching someone important again,” Dom said flatly.

“Hey, I didn’t know that asshole was the sheriff,” Ryder muttered. “Teddy’s suggestion sounds awesome. I want to get drunk and do stupid shit. Take my mind off things.”

“Hm,” Kris said, looking at him. “We didn’t have Teddy before.”

“That’s right. I’ll keep you guys from getting into trouble.” Dom groaned next to him. Dom slid closer to his mate, dragging his little plastic chair closer so their shoulders touched. Dom knew he was the one who was going to intervene if things got too rough.

“Please? I think it would be good for us to do something together. You know, in celebration of me coming here,” Teddy said.
