Chapter 19

After I had dropped my soaked running shoes inside the door and had a hot shower, I curled up with Lilymylove on my bed. What was I doing chasing this map? I should be out sailing in my small boat, with another sailor, skimming across the water.

I got up and sat at my desk. I chewed on the end of my pen, straightened my books, and then pushed back my chair. I’d made my bed and picked up most of my clothes, so I went over to my favourite thing: the dollhouse Grampa had built for me. The pretend dog had tipped over. I righted it and put it beside the tiny cat, who I kept by the front door. Then I set the miniature pot of daisies beside them. After I had exhausted all possible chores, I sat back down at my desk. I fingered the email I had printed off of Mom’s computer, its colour a blend of pink fading into blue on account of our ink running low. I’d read the invitation to Jenny’s birthday barbecue twice. I hunched down and turned to a new page in my diary.
