Chapter 3

Zelda

We just leave through the closest open door. This place is huge. It’s probably the first legit mansion I’ve ever been in, and I feel like every time I go through a doorway I’m expecting to find a room and instead I find an entire wing of this house. It’s unending.

I guess professors make more money than I thought.

The door leads to some space that’s too big to be a hallway, but too small to be a room. It’s probably got some name I don’t know, but there’s an ugly-but-expensive looking bench beneath a mirror and I sit on it, leaning my back against the cool wall, and breathe deep.

That almost just happened. Right there, on the dance floor, in front of everyone.

Logan sits next to me. I don’t look at him, because I’m a little afraid of what will happen if I do.

I wonder if I should apologize, but what the hell do I say? Sorry I almost just drunkenly kissed you in public after forcing you to dance with me?

And what’s he gonna say back? Probably some variation of Zelda, you know I don’t think of you that way, you’re like my sister.

Guys don’t generally get erections for their sisters, but he’s drunk, we’re not technically related, and I was pretty much rubbing myself against him, so yeah, of course he got it up.

“Whose house is this?” Logan says, his voice rumbling through the semi-quiet, the thumping music leaking in from the ballroom.

“Some English professor and his brother, who's an engineering professor,” I say. Addison told me their names, but hell if I can remember them right now. “I guess they invited all their students.”

Logan looks around slowly.

“Some professors invited all their students to a rager?” he asks. “Are they even here?”

“Yeah, Addy pointed them out earlier,” I say, taking another sip of my now-nonalcoholic apple cider. “Dude in an argyle sweater vest and a bowtie. I’m not even sure he dressed up.”

Now Logan turns his head and looks at me, and even though my stomach tightens, I look back. He’s frowning.

“There was a guy in a sweater vest taking a slutty nun up the stairs earlier,” he says.

I think. It’s not that easy.

“Earlier, right after I got here, and you were mad at someone who thought your costume was a showgirl,” he says. “They were right there.”

“She was a sexy nun?” I say, the memory finally surfacing.

“Well, she had the head thing, but also a short skirt and her boobs were basically out,” Logan says, then raises his eyebrows, like he’s amused. “What did you think she was?”

I look away and scrunch my face, because now I feel pretty dumb.

“I thought she was, like... a conceptual penguin or something,” I admit.

Logan grins.

“Shut up,” I mutter.

“You’re the only person I know who’d think conceptual penguin before sexy nun,” he says.

“You’re the one sitting here talking to me instead of getting out there and finding your own sexy nun,” I point out.

Not that I mind, I think. I like it.
