Chapter 16

Will

“She went on a date with another guy.” I downed the whiskey, enjoying the burn in the back of my throat. Nothing was more irritating than thinking of Linley’s legs spread for someone else—not that she even said that happened.

“Yeah, and?” Axle gave me a funny look as he tossed his beer into a trash can on the other side of the bar. “I don’t really get the big deal. All these guys around here think that some woman fuckin’ belongs to them after one hookup, and that shit is just stupid. She’s her own person. She can do whatever she wants. It’s not like you slapped a label on it and made it exclusive.”

“Well,” I huffed. “Aren’t you progressive.” I motioned to Sarah to fill my glass, and she rolled her eyes.

“Don’t you think you’ve had enough, Will?”

I rolled my eyes at her. “It’s never enough.”

“Get him a water for that alcoholic comment,” Axle ordered, shooting me a warning glance. “We have too much shit going on for me to be babysitting you all night. Viper is still recovering, and we still don’t know what’s happening at our drops.”

“I don’t need a babysitter.” I ran my fingers along the lacquered bar top, staring down at my calloused hands. Ink lined my knuckles, and I wondered if Linley had ever found the roughness around my edges attractive—or if she was off going on dates with men who wore polos and khakis.

Fuck.

“Dude, just find another pussy for the night.”

“Ah, maybe you’re not so progressive,” I chuckled, eyeing Axle. He was the darkest of all of us, and while I had no qualms with violence, Axle seemed to thrive in it. He was one who always got his hands dirty—and I could only imagine what went on in that brain of his.

“Oh shit...” The tone in his voice caught my attention and I glanced over at him, and then I heard it.

“Linley is staying here for the night. Her place isn’t safe,” Hannah’s voice called out, making everyone aware—like they even cared.

“You can stay here as long as you like, doc,” Bear spoke up first.

I gritted my teeth, keeping my eyes focused on the bar. There was no way in hell that I could be around her at the moment. I’d had one too many drinks. My filter would be nonexistent.

“You’re fucked, man,” Axle chuckled, nudging my shoulder as he slid off the barstool beside me. “I’m going out to smoke.”

I didn’t say anything to him, not sure if it was an invitation anyway. I just kept staring at my hands, ignoring the glass of water Sarah had sat down beside me.

“Can we talk?”

I recognized Linley’s perfume but didn’t budge.

“Will, please.”

“No,” I muttered, my jaw so tense that it shot a searing pain through the side of my face. “Go away, Linley.”

“I really want to talk.” Her voice had an air of pleading with it, and despite me being angry as fuck with her, my dick found it arousing.

“I really want you to go away.
