To sum up:

Don’t market to other authors.

Find groups filled with readers, not just authors.

Focus on groups that are targeted to your genre.

Don’t gather up followers just to get followers. Quality counts more than quantity.

If you hate social media, don’t worry. You don’t have to do it.

Author Groups

You are probably tired of me talking about author groups, but they are so important that I’m going to spend this chapter on them. There’s more to author groups than you might think. There are also different kinds of author groups. Let’s talk about them.

The first kind I’m going to explore is an indie author group, like The Writing Gals Facebook group. This is a group for all authors of fiction, both male and female. (We’re called The Writing Gals because the four founders of the group are gals, and that’s the name we chose for ourselves. It doesn’t mean the group is only for women.) We don’t turn anyone away, but we do ask that authors follow the posting rules. (No swearing, no self-promotion, no arguing. Those are the main ones.)

There are many benefits to belonging to a group like this. The number one asset is knowledge. There are a lot of things to learn about writing and publishing successfully. Hanging out and reading posts in an author group like this can only help you gain insight into what is working, and what isn’t. You’ll not only read first-hand accounts of what authors are doing to be successful, but you’ll get links to videos and articles that give you exactly the kind of information you need. If you’re not selling books, you probably don’t even know what kind of advice you need. Reading the posts in an active group of authors will help you.

Another thing you will find in a large group like this are connections with other authors. This is helpful if you ever want to collaborate with other authors in your genre, or share promotions, or even just to know authors in your genre. Believe me, this is helpful to you, even if you don’t know it yet. But you won’t make connections if you lurk in the group and never say anything. No one will know you are there.

I hear authors say things like, “Well, I don’t like Facebook.” Or, “Facebook is toxic. I stay away from it.” And that’s fine. You’re free to like or not like what you want. Just remember, you can use Facebook as a tool for your author business without using it for anything else. You don’t have to read toxic posts.

Personally, I use Facebook almost exclusively for author connections. I unfollow anyone who posts things that are toxic to me. My feed is a happy place. It’s full of authors talking about author things. If I want to see what Uncle Fred is posting about the election, I can go look at his feed. But honestly, I don’t care. I like my feed to be full of authors chatting about publishing and marketing.
