Adjusting Priorities and Focus: Eboné J.

I had been associate dean at a small liberal arts college, and I was moving to become associate dean at a Pac-10 school, but that is where the similarities ended. The new job would pay twice as much, and I would have seven assistant deans reporting to me. It was really a big move.

The best advice I got was from an old hand who’d had just about every [appointment] at the university at one time or another. We went to lunch, and he told me who everybody was and about the personalities of all the key players. But the most important thing he told me was this: I would have to stop worrying about every single student because I would be unable to do my work—the job I was hired to do—if I let individual students’ concerns eat up my day. I got into this line of work because I love college students and I love to serve them. I believe in the model of the servant leader. I mean, I’m dedicated. But his advice was right on the money.
