Another type of project that you can undertake is to carve letters into wood, which seems easy but does require a little bit of skill and some patience. Carving letters into wood may not technically be whittling but it is adjacent to whittling and can help you develop skills of precision that can be utilized in other projects. In this beginning phase, you are just looking to carve out letters in relief onto a wood surface (rather than carving a three-dimensional letter itself). Developing this skill allows you to personalize your projects, of course, as well as making practical or whimsical signage for your home or shop.
The first step is always to draw the lettering onto the wood before you get started (and be sure to use a soft wood like balsa or basswood for this project). There are several ways in which you can do this: you can use a stencil to trace letters onto your wood; you can use carbon paper to transfer lettering to the wood if you donât have a stencil for what you want or you can draw the lettering free-hand if you have the confidence and skill to do so. Be aware, though, that certain types of lettering lend themselves to carving: thin or curvy styles of lettering are much more difficult than clear block letters. Also, when you are starting out, the larger and chunkier the lettering, the easier it is to work with. Again, think about how much detail you are capable of rendering at this point in your crafting.
