Nine

Samantha slipped into the pub under the shield of a salt-and-pepper colored wig and a long black cloak, praying all the while she did not cross paths with Adam. No doubt he’d be in disguise as well. Maybe they’d fool each other so well as to meet and neither takes so much as a second look. She shook off the foolish thought as quickly as it came to her. It didn’t matter how Adam tried to hide his dark good looks. Even at the train station, she’d somehow sensed his presence before her eyes fell on the familiar strut.

The masculine walk bespoke a confidence that could not be denied. A strong jaw that would take a full bushy beard to conceal, and eyes—glorious brown gems that would make a puppy envious—as warm and intoxicating as a fine Christmas wine. Oh yes, she would recognize Adam Hawkins anywhere.

She’d chased him to the train station like a jilted lover in hopes of a second chance. Told herself it was because she wanted to inform him of the letter, that, if he was as grand a detective as her brother and fiancé boasted, he might be able to help. Perhaps if they worked together, they could capture the fiend.

Yet, his appearing in disguise had raised her guard. If she hadn’t gone to the station, she too would have believed him en route to America. Even now she couldn’t be sure he was not the murderer, this Jack the Ripper, whose name now fell shakily off every tongue in London and caused people to cast frequent glances over their shoulders.

However, Adam had seemed genuinely taken aback by the letter. What was he hiding? Perhaps he was right. Maybe the letter was nothing more than a hoax. Only the murderer could be certain.

Edward believed Adam was leaving. Or did he? A shiver trickled down her back. She wished she could be sure. They were both sworn to an oath to serve and protect, it wouldn’t be unheard of for two officers of the law to be somehow in cahoots.

But they couldn’t be working together. If that were the case, then Adam would have no reason to lurk in the shadows. Then again, this was not the first time the American had been to London. He probably had many friends who might reveal his occupation.

Jealousy gripped her heart. She couldn’t help but wonder how many of those friends might be female.

A brief flash of silver metal glinted in the mirror behind the bar as a man lifted an arm to drain his pint of ale, parting the front of his cloak just enough to reveal something secured in an inside pocket. Samantha’s heart leaped into her throat. A knife? She kept her gaze on him as he moved, noted his wide-shouldered, stocky stature. Her gaze swept over the stranger’s face, took in a black mustache, the dark swath of hair peeking from under his hat. Indeed, his appearance matched several eyewitness accounts of the murderer. That fact and a concealed knife made him a likely suspect.
