Sorting out a muddled mash-up

I was recently working on a white paper for a major software company. At the start, the requirements sounded like a straightforward backgrounder, describing the benefits of an updated product. But then my client insisted on outlining the history of this market space, the problem the product solved, and what to look for in an ideal solution. Okay, but now it was sounding more like a problem/solution. As the content came together, I pinpointed seven key factors that a successful product in that space should offer. Hmmm . . . now it was becoming a numbered list.

The content was getting muddled, but I was too close to the project to see why. As the reviewers went over the content, something felt like it didn’t belong. In fact, we were mixing up all three flavors in one document. Ultimately, the fix became clear: We dropped several pages of the product-specific details, and the white paper evolved into a workable mash-up of a numbered list–problem/solution. As a side benefit, the length dropped from more than a dozen pages down to a more manageable ten. And the final white paper was well received by its target audience.
