After her encounter with Finn before the sun had even risen in the sky, Olivia felt that it was best to steer clear of her family for the day. She texted McCarty and said that she wanted to return to the woods to do a little investigating. So after a quick, silent breakfast, Olivia and Brock slipped out of the cabin and headed into the trees in silence. Olivia knew it would be difficult returning to the spot where it happened. They walked the path she had walked so many times as a younger woman. A path that had once been full of happy childhood memories was now stained with blood and misery.

She held her breath as she approached the yellow tape surrounding the area where the body had been found. Olivia didn’t want to picture Caro lying there, her head bloody, her eyes vacant. But there was no real way to escape that. That image wasn’t going to be scrubbed from her mind any time soon.

“You alright?” Brock asked as Olivia bent down to examine the ground. She shrugged her shoulders.

“No. Not really. But I’m ready for the day, if that’s what you mean.”

“You look tired,” Brock said softly. Olivia let out a small chuckle.

“Gee, thanks.”

“Are you sure you shouldn’t be at home getting some rest?”

“I appreciate you trying to help…and I love you for it. But there’s nothing you can do for me now. Other than helping me to solve this problem. Then maybe I can rest easy.”

“Noted. I won’t push you,” Brock said. Olivia felt a rush of warmth for him. She appreciated that he didn’t push the matter further. He respected her enough to know the time and place for that. “Where’s McCarty today?”

“She and her team are doing a deep dive at the hotel. But I said we’d start out here. Since we’re not technically on the case, I thought I would give her some space to do her work. And I figured I might have some insight she doesn’t have out here…something that could prove useful.” Olivia straightened up, looking around her. The copse of trees was dense and repetitive, but as Olivia looked up at the tree before her, familiarity swept over her. It was a large oak with a wide base, roots weaving in and out of the ground like thread through fabric. It stood out from the
