Chapter 8

Chapter Eight: Setbacks

She slammed the door in his face so hard he thought she was going to take it off its hinges. He turned on his heel and headed down the hall to his room, where he wanted to do nothing but rest.

For a minute there, he thought Rosalyn was on something. The theory made sense, but this disappearance proved that not everyone was a victim of the guy taking people because their birthday fell on the zodiac.

Luis Rivera may have gone missing on his own, or someone else was the cause of it. He didn’t know what the cause was, but it couldn’t have had anything to do with Rosalyn’s zodiac theory.

Rebecca’s disappearance might have had nothing to do with it either.

The moment he thought of Rebecca, her smiling face appeared in his mind. He remembered the last day he had seen her.

It was a normal day, nothing out of the ordinary. When it came to these cases, one could predict what was going to happen or when life would get out of control.

He was in the kitchen, having a bite of his ultra-nutritious breakfast, which included a Pop-Tart, when Rebecca bounded into the kitchen. She was wearing her school uniform, something she had lamented about before getting to high school.

Rebecca had been looking forward to high school when, at the last minute, they decided to issue a uniform requirement. Some of the students protested, but the result was the same: the students had to wear school uniforms or face trouble.

“Hey, Becca,” he greeted.

She flashed her pearly whites at him, eyes sparkling.

“Hey, my favorite big brother!”

“Becca, I’m your only big brother.”

“Yes, and? It doesn’t mean you can’t be my favorite.”

“Who else would be your favorite?” he asked, frowning.

She giggled. “No one, but it’s funny to see my big brother getting jealous over someone else taking their title away.”

He sighed. “Becca, do you need me to pick you up after school today?”

“Yes, but only if the weather stays crappy. If it changes, then I’ll walk home.”

“Okay, just give me a call. I’ll be doing most of my classes online today, so I will be at home all day.”

Rebecca leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. “You’re a great brother, you know that, right?”

“Yes, you’ve said that several times. Is there something you need? Other than a ride home, of course.”

“Nothing!” she huffed.

Before he knew it, she reached out and took the remaining Pop-Tart from his plate. He gasped, “You did not just take my Pop-Tart!”

Rebecca giggled again. “Oh, come on, Colby! Mom’s waiting out there to take me to school before she heads to work. I’m already running late, so she’s not going to be happy if I take another minute.”

“But my Pop-Tart!”

“Don’t you have like six other boxes in the cabinet?”

He scowled. “Perhaps, but that’s not the point, Becca.”

“No, big brother, I think it’s exactly the point!”

She ran out the door with nothing more than a quick wave, the door slamming shut behind her.

He shook his head.
